Our 2016 season finished how it should have started in March, qualifying 2nd in the actual MR2 session was a great feeling and there was still time to be had due to yellow flags sectors. Davies grabbing the all important pole position & a point, helping his championship campaign.
Race one saw us pull ahead of Davies, but Ward and Matt Rowe were putting the squeeze on from both sides round turn one. Exiting in 2nd, a short battle with Davies resulted in him getting through at the last hairpin. Keeping up with the front two showed we had the pace despite the paddock trash talk of a "mixed up grid" and "people out of place", however a couple mistakes did lead to championship runner up White finding a way through and battling with Ward & Davies. Finally on the last lap Heron was a man on a mission and set us up perfectly for an undercut on the last corner, resulting in 5th place across the chequered flag. Which we were still happy about!
Race two and another reasonable start, following Traynor round turn one on the inside moved us from 8th to 6th and holding it for several laps. However an issue developed, requring some early and slower braking so we gradually lost places to Heron, Ben Rowe and on the last lap Gallagher. However the two Championship rivals went off the track gaining us two bonus places, meaning 7th at the chequered flag.
At a track which we have never tested and had three DNFs in March, we were happy with the results to end our 2016 season and finally show what should have been. Onwards and upwards for 2017.
Congratulations to Jim Davies who has won the 2016 championship by a single point. Some great close racing this year, some of which i was involved in!
Massive thanks again to my engine supplier- Sean & Mike at Hurley Race Engineering & for all the other help and advice along the way. Not forgetting Ems Nickerson and all the Mansbridge family who have come and supported us through the season.
